Syllabus: Spring 2017

Program Description:

This program is the combination of theory and practice as it relates to group work, leadership techniques, communication, human relations, problem solving, and decision making. The program emphasizes the role of the student leader in connection to individual values, group dynamics, and community relationships.

Program purpose:

The Tate Leadership Scholars Program is an initiative created to:

  • Purposefully invest in organizational leaders
  • Empower emerging leaders with essential skills to increase personal growth as well as overall effectiveness as a leader
  • Create various opportunities for cross-organizational interaction and relationship building;
  • Provide opportunities for students to apply leadership experiences to positions beyond the University of Georgia
  • Establish a network of leadership scholars to return and invest in future student leaders at the University of Georgia

 

Learning Objectives:

As a result of participating in the Tate Leadership Scholars Program, Scholars will:

  • Develop relationships through a network of student leaders throughout campus
  • Develop relationships with faculty, administrative leaders, university alumni and members of the Athens community.
  • Advocate for the needs of student organizations and involvement at UGA
  • Express and “define” their leadership amongst peers, including strengths, challenges, ethics, values, morals and understanding the process of change
  • Utilize leadership behaviors amongst peers through activities in academic, social and co-curricular settings
  • Actualize student leader specific skills

 

Course Expectations:

Students in this course are expected to be an active learner, which requires each student to take an active role in their own learning and to share the learning process with the class.  The following are components of active learning:

  • Attendance at all class sessions is critical to promoting a learning community within the class.  Each member benefits from the viewpoints of the other members.  If you need to miss a class for unforeseen reasons you are responsible for getting all information covered in class, it is good to make these arrangements with a classmate in advance.
  • Read all assigned materials and make note of questions, inconsistencies, areas of interest, and connections you find to other readings.
  • Engage in Dia-logue, not Discussion
  • Active participation in class discussions allows each student to test out his or her own assumptions about professional practice, as well as expand the worldview of others in the class.
  • Maintain the Law of the Rubber Band in class discussions and projects in order to challenge yourself by pushing yourself outside the comfort zone and into the growth zone.
